RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING

Industrial Radiographic Testing (RT), also known as radiographic inspection or radiographic examination, uses X-rays to penetrate the surface of products or materials in order to view the internal structure and verify integrity.

Radiographic testing can be performed at Laboratory Testing Inc. by either of two methods to meet customer and specification requirements:

  • Computed Radiography โ€“ digital images
  • Conventional Radiography โ€“ film

While these radiography testing processes are basically the same, they differ in the type of output that is produced. Conventional radiography creates a permanent visible film record and meets the requirements of specifications for certain industries such as aerospace and defense. Computed radiography provides the digital equivalent of the conventional X-ray film, with the added advantages of easy sharing and storage of images.

VALUE OF RADIOGRAPHIC INSPECTION

EOQM performs radiographic inspection on many types of solid products and materials, including large and small metal and plastic test pieces. Like all nondestructive testing (NDT), a radiographic examination does not harm these items. This process can be quite useful in many applications, including:

  • Locating internal discontinuities such as shrinkage, cracking and porosity
  • Verifying the integrity of internal components
  • Determining the quality of welds
  • Helping to determine the source in fire investigations

Much of the radiographic testing performed at EOQM takes place in our 20 ft. x 20 ft. inspection vault using X-ray equipment that can penetrate solid products of varying thicknesses, depending on the material. This arrangement, along with our high-capacity forklifts and 3-ton crane, allows for the radiographic inspection of very large products and materials.

Our conventional and computed radiography capabilities also include small product inspection such as electronic assemblies using a special X-ray camera in a small cabinet unit.
